Biomedical Engineering at UGM, as an interdisciplinary flagship program, has started since 2006 CASECUBE (Common Asian European Curriculum on Biomedical Engineering) program under the auspices of Asia-Link project, involving Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Engineering (Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) UGM, in collaboration with other higher education (ITB-Bandung, University of Groningen-Netherlands, University Ghent-Belgium, University of Leeds-UK, and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi). This project initiated the interest in multidisciplinary studies at the Masters and Doctoral levels at the UGM Graduate School. In addition to having organized master and doctoral lectures that have graduated a number of Master and Doctoral students. Biomedical Engineering UGM is also a member of professional organizations and actively involved in research activities. Biomedical Engineering UGM is a member of the Indonesian Biomedical Society (MBI or IBES/Indonesian Biomedical Engineering Society) and AIPTBI (Association of Indonesian Biomedical Engineering Education Institution). IBES was established on April 4, 2001 with a notary and its activities include seminars and research.
Biomedical Engineering UGM is responsible for the research on the development of intravascular therapy devices with stents, which involves an interdisciplinary research team. The stent product (INA-STENT) developed by the UGM Biomedical Engineering research team in six years of research with a grant from Kemristek DIKTI, it is expected to become a national product with quality that meets standards and more affordable costs, so that it can support government policies in health services. The development of INA-STENT has been published in several national and international seminars.
On January 23, 2020, a patent certificate was granted for the invention titled Cardiovascular stent with RM-shaped structure to increase the radian strength of plaque retention with Patent number:IDP000066787. The testing process has been carried out up to the pre-clinical trial stage and preparation for clinical trials. Meanwhile, the production line has also been prepared at Science & Techno Park UGM, Instruments for cardiovascular clinical diagnosis and treatment have also been prepared at the Cath Lab located at Prof. Soeparwi Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM.
However, only in early 2020, the Biomedical Engineering Master Study Program was allowed to stand independently as a study program, which had previously been an interest in the Biotechnology Study of the UGM Graduate School.
